Championing Pool Excellence: The World Pool Championship in Saudi Arabia

The prestigious World Pool Championship, the crown jewel of the WNT, is set to take place at the Green Halls in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from June 3rd to 8th. This remarkable event is brought to fruition through a partnership between the Saudi Arabian Billiard & Snooker Federation (SABSF) and the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Sport. The tournament will witness 128 of the globe’s top cueists engaging in fierce competition within a double-elimination format, vying for a groundbreaking prize pool of $1,000,000, including a remarkable $250,000 for the winner—the highest ever in the history of the World Nineball Tour.

Among the esteemed competitors, reigning champion Francisco Sanchez Ruiz, five-time US Open champion and 2022 world champion Shane Van Boening, and 2018 world champion Joshua Filler will grace the event with their presence, intensifying the quest for the ultimate individual accolade in the sport.

Sanchez Ruiz expressed his anticipation, recognizing the event’s significance in the evolution of pool: “The World Championship in Saudi Arabia marks a historic moment for pool, and I am eager to defend my title amidst the world’s finest players in Jeddah.”

The tournament’s roster will comprise the top 100 players from the World Nineball Tour Rankings, with the remaining 28 slots filled through wildcard entries, including ten allocated to the host nation, Saudi Arabia. Notable Saudi players like Saad Aldress, Ahmed Al jabar, and Khalid Alotaibi are among those set to showcase their skills on the international stage.

This strategic partnership not only establishes Saudi Arabia as the host of the World Pool Championship for the next decade but also underscores the nation’s rapid ascent in global sports. Since the inception of Vision 2030 in 2015, Saudi Arabia has emerged as a hub for sporting events, hosting over 100 international competitions and engaging millions of sports enthusiasts, particularly the youth.

The upcoming championship, spanning six days from June 3rd, will feature 223 matches and 50 televised hours of pool, extending its reach to audiences worldwide. Defending champion Francisco Sanchez Ruiz aims to defend his title against formidable opponents, including Syria’s Mohammad Soufi.

Moreover, the ten-year agreement signifies a commitment to nurturing the sport within Saudi Arabia, emphasizing grassroots development and fostering local talent. Dr. Nasser Saab Al-Shammari, President of the Saudi Arabia Billiard & Snooker Federation, expressed excitement for the historic event and the opportunity it presents for local players to compete alongside international stars.

Emily Frazer, CEO of Matchroom Multi-Sport, conveyed gratitude to the Ministry of Sport for Saudi Arabia for their support, emphasizing the partnership’s potential to cultivate future champions and enhance the sport’s infrastructure in the region. This collaboration underscores the World Nineball Tour’s dedication to providing unparalleled opportunities for professional players and fostering the growth of pool on a global scale.
