Riyadh Season Welcomes World Masters Tournament

The Riyadh Season has excitingly expanded its array of events this year with the announcement of the inaugural Riyadh Season World Masters of Snooker, confirmed by HE Advisor Turki Alalshikh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the General Entertainment Authority (GEA). This historic event for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is scheduled to take place from March 4 to 6 at Boulevard Arena in Boulevard City, Riyadh. The competition will showcase renowned snooker players, including the seven-time World Snooker Championship winner Ronnie O’Sullivan, 2019 World Champion Judd Trump, and the current titleholder Luca Brecel.

Adhering to World Snooker rules and regulations, the tournament will introduce an innovative twist with the inclusion of a 23rd ball called the Riyadh Season ball. This distinctive gold ball, valued at 20 points, can only be pocketed after all other balls have been successfully cleared from the table, specifically when a player is on a maximum break to achieve a score of 167.

The agreement for this groundbreaking tournament was formalized through the signing between Eng. Faisal Bafarat, CEO of GEA, and Steve Dawson, Chairman of World Snooker Tour. The signing ceremony was attended by HE Advisor Turki Alalshikh, along with sports promoters Eddie Hearn and Barry Hearn.

Expressing his enthusiasm, HE Advisor Turki Alalshikh stated, “We are thrilled to be hosting our first-ever professional snooker tournament in the Kingdom. Snooker is watched and played by millions around the world, and we look forward to welcoming some of the greatest players and snooker fans to our country, showcasing what Saudi Arabia and Riyadh Season have to offer.”

Steve Dawson, Chairman of World Snooker Tour, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, saying, “It is a great privilege for the World Snooker Tour to work in partnership with HE Advisor Turki Alalshikh to stage an event in Saudi Arabia for the first time. This is a huge breakthrough for snooker into a new territory, and we see this as the beginning of a new adventure for our sport in the region.”

Dawson expressed anticipation for the event, highlighting the opportunity to bring the sport to Riyadh and introduce local fans to some of snooker’s all-time greats. Further details, including the full list of participants and the schedule, will be announced in the coming weeks.
