Ronnie O’Sullivan Survives Thrilling Final Frame to Reach UK Championship Quarter-Finals

Ronnie O’Sullivan, the world number one, secured a spot in the quarter-finals of the MrQ UK Championship in York by overcoming Robert Milkins 6-5 in a tense final frame. Despite O’Sullivan’s dominant 9-0 lead in the head-to-head standings against Milkins, the match revealed moments of uncharacteristic play from the seven-time World Champion, almost leading to a surprising exit.

The victory not only maintains O’Sullivan’s perfect record against Milkins but also strengthens his position as the world number one. A loss would have opened the door for Judd Trump to potentially claim the top spot with a win in his next game.

This remarkable win marks O’Sullivan’s 140th ranking event quarter-final in his illustrious career. His pursuit of an eighth UK title continues with a match against China’s Zhou Yuelong in the next round.

The match against Milkins witnessed both players missing opportunities in the opening frames, allowing Milkins to take a 2-0 lead. O’Sullivan, however, rallied with contributions of 86, 53, and 142, securing four consecutive frames for a 4-2 advantage. Milkins fought back to narrow the gap, but O’Sullivan found himself on the brink of victory at 5-3. A break of 120 from Milkins forced a decider, where O’Sullivan, despite facing challenges, ultimately prevailed.

Reflecting on the match, O’Sullivan acknowledged Milkins’ improvement as a match player over the last two years. Despite concerns about his cue action, O’Sullivan emphasized his determination to stay mentally focused and enjoy the tournament, noting the unpredictable nature of the game.

Meanwhile, on the other table, Zhou Yuelong clinched a 6-3 victory over two-time UK Champion John Higgins, showcasing breaks of 65, 86, 52, and 63. This win propels Zhou to the quarter-finals, marking his second appearance at this stage in the UK Championship, following his semi-final run in 2020.
