Judd Trump’s Commanding Win and Pursuit of Glory at MrQ UK Championship

Judd Trump secured a dominant 6-1 victory over Pang Junxu, keeping his hopes alive for a potential fourth ranking title of the season and the pursuit of the world number one spot at the MrQ UK Championship in York.

Trump’s remarkable season started with him becoming only the fifth player in snooker history to achieve three consecutive ranking titles, achieving a remarkable 22-match winning streak. His globetrotting success saw him claim back-to-back victories at the English Open, Wuhan Open, and the Northern Ireland Open.

This outstanding form has put him in contention to surpass Ronnie O’Sullivan as the world number one. To achieve this, the 34-year-old must reach at least the quarter-finals. In the next round, he will face either Jack Lisowski or Jamie Jones in the last 16.

Pang, the 2021 Rookie of the Year, earned his place in the final stages after overcoming Mark Davis 6-4 and Craig Steadman 6-2 in the qualifying rounds. However, facing the in-form Trump proved to be a formidable challenge, and Pang couldn’t secure more than one frame.

Trump took an early lead in the opening frame with a break of 114. Although Pang leveled the score at 1-1 in a fragmented 28-minute second frame, he couldn’t register another victory. Trump dominated the following frames with breaks of 124, 68, and 50, securing a convincing 6-1 victory. Trump, despite battling illness, expressed relief at progressing and emphasized his consistent performances and confidence.

Meanwhile, on the other table, Barry Hawkins, the European Masters champion, fought hard for a 6-4 win over former Welsh Open finalist Ben Woollaston. Despite Woollaston’s initial lead with a break of 100 and a 3-1 advantage, Hawkins turned the tide after the interval, winning five of the next four frames. Hawkins now awaits the winner between Mark Selby and Mark Joyce in the last 16.
